Disclaimer
This is an estimate, not advice
Probate Calculator provides general information and an automated estimate. It is not tax advice, legal advice or financial advice, and nothing on this site should be relied on as such.
We are not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority and we do not provide regulated advice. The calculator performs arithmetic on figures you supply and explains the rules it has applied. It does not recommend any product, investment or course of action.
Before acting on anything you read here, take advice from a qualified professional — a solicitor, chartered tax adviser, accountant or FCA-authorised financial adviser — who can consider your full circumstances.
No reliance
Inheritance Tax depends on facts and details that a calculator cannot capture: the precise terms of a will, the nature and history of each asset, domicile and residence, trust arrangements, the conduct of past gifts, and the interaction of reliefs. Two estates with identical headline values can produce very different liabilities.
We make no representation or warranty that the estimate is accurate or complete, and we accept no liability for any loss arising from reliance on it. Where the result matters, have it checked.
Nothing on this page excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.
What the calculator does not model
Deliberately out of scope:
- Trusts of any kind — the relevant property regime, ten-year charges, exit charges
- The residence nil-rate band downsizing addition (a home sold or downsized on or after 8 July 2015)
- Gifts with reservation of benefit
- Quick succession relief and double taxation relief
- Non-UK domicile and long-term-residence cases
- Woodlands relief and heritage property conditional exemption
- The option to pay tax by instalments
- The joint ownership discount (enter the discounted share value yourself)
- Normal expenditure out of income — explained in the gifts guide rather than computed
If any of these apply, the result will be wrong, usually materially.
Figures and dates
Tax rates and thresholds change, and some of the rules modelled here are new. Rules on this site are current as at 9 October 2026.
These values in particular are flagged as requiring confirmation against current HMRC and GOV.UK guidance:
- Business & Agricultural Property Relief £1m allowance (from 6 April 2026)
- Nil-rate band freeze end date
Always check the current position on GOV.UK before acting.
Jurisdiction
Inheritance Tax is a UK-wide tax. The probate information on this site — application fees, excepted estates, timelines and process — applies to England & Wales only. Scotland uses confirmation and Northern Ireland has its own procedure, both differing in process, forms and fees.
Your figures
The calculation runs entirely in your browser. The figures you enter are not transmitted to us or to anyone else, and are not stored on any server. Nothing is saved when you close the page. See the privacy policy.
